For years Berens River has always branded our name with the idea that Education is Power, because knowledge is the one thing no one can take away from you.
We have graduated Master’s students, Lawyers, Doctors, Nurses, Trades Skill Laborers, Social Workers, Early Childhood Educators, Teachers, and many more!
We always encourage our alumni to come back to the Community and tell their stories to the youth of Berens River; to remind them that with dedication, support, and perseverance, their goals are achievable.
Student Services of the Berens River Education Committee is to provide financial and academic support to the membership of the Berens River First Nation interested in pursuing secondary, post-secondary and technical studies in recognized and authorized Institutions.
The Berens River First Nation asserts that the right to Education, including post-secondary and technical education is a Treaty Right. Any matters within the context of this policy, or the fact that the Berens River First Nation administers this program for its membership, shall not abolish or invalidate the Treaty Right to Education. This policy is developed with the express understanding that all students respect and understand their obligations to maintaining respect to Education is the responsibility of the Federal Government, and in administering Student Services. We shall undertake to implement programs and services within the context of the Indigenous Services Canada Guidelines, based on availability of funding, and the following general goals of the Berens River First Nation and its Education Committee:
The “Vision” of the Berens River First Nation is of a healthy and unified people who collectively support and share with the community, the responsibility for promoting an inclusive relationship which recognizes the uniqueness of the individual and values life-long learning by providing the support to fulfill dreams.
In relation to delivery of Education Programs and Services, the Chief and Council, Education Committee Members, and Staff will be responsible for the adoption of policies and procedures which will facilitate a more efficient operation to serve the members of the Berens River First Nation. This will be achieved by upholding the belief that “together” everyone will help each other “Ma-Mow-Wi-Chi-I-Ti-Tah”, and further, that we as a First Nation will “look to the future” “I-Nah-Pi-tah-Ne-kan”.
